Article Marketing

Article marketingEven with all of the Google algorithm adjustments article marketing is still one of the best ways to create backlinks and drive traffic to your blog. Many people would argue that video marketing is an even more powerful avenue and that could be true, but the combination of quality article and video marketing creates a powerful one-two punch. Nowadays everyone just calls it content marketing and I think that’s the best way to describe what we all need to do on a daily basis in order to create a powerful internet presence. This post focuses on article marketing and how not everything is created equal. Here are a few tips to put your article marketing strategies on steroids.

Article Marketing Overview

There are enough article submission services and article distribution software products online to strangle a horse. Many of these are quite good, but the one thing that I’ve noticed is that these programs and services typically don’t submit to high page rank directories or blogs. Another thing that I’ve picked up is that a few high page rank links that you create when you submit articles are much more powerful than hundreds of articles submitted to low page rank sites. As a matter of fact the Google, Panda algorithm adjustments were, among others things, targeted to penalize all those junk sites that litter our online world. So if you have a blog and want to improve both your page rank and Alexa score then you need to submit content to high page rank sites.

Article Marketing Strategies

So you’ve just written a killer post and published on your blog. Are you done? Did you pat yourself on the back and feel like you accomplished something? Well you should feel good because that one activity is probably more than most online marketers ever accomplish. The truth is however, that your job is about one-third of the way done. Don’t worry because the next two-thirds is the boring and monotonous part, but it’s the part that can get your blog rocking and rollin, if you know what I’m saying.

If you have the money, then I would definitely recommend subscribing to an article submission service such as Unique Article Wizard or My Article Network (see my reviews) or pick up some software such as Article Marketing Robot. When you submit to services though, your primary focus is building backlinks, not trying to generate immediate traffic to your blog. The main issue is that you’re getting lots of piddly links which isn’t a bad thing, because you want to build lots and lots of links all over the place, so low PR links should be part of an overall approach, but high page rank links will really propel your blog.

So once you’ve posted and published your original article to your blog, then you either need to rewrite that same article into multiple versions or you can spin it. Now I don’t love spinning articles, but The Best Spinner is the easiest to use. If you want quality spun content though, you’ll need to spend some time with it. Some people say that you need the new spun articles to be 70% unique. I don’t know about that. I shoot for around 30% and focus on the first and last paragraph, but once your spin syntax is created, you’ll have loads of semi-unique articles that you can manually submit to some high page rank sites.

The final step is to submit your articles to some authority sites. One covet is that some of these directories require editorial review and most of the time they can spot a a spun article from a mile or two away. Ezine Articles is a great place to submit, but they take 3 to 5 days to review and approve your article and they’re pretty picky. What a lot of people do is submit their original article to Ezine and then the spun stuff for less stringent directory sites. Squidoo and Hub Pages really require some pretty good content as well. Not the best places for spun stuff.

You can create a nice little link wheel by submitting to Go Articles, Article City, Better Networker, BizNet, Site References and so forth., Check out there links, Alexa rank and page rank below. You’ll notice that all of these sites are established, authority sites and once you create a backlink with one of these bad boys, then you’ll start seeing your own blogs page rank and Alexa score improve.

There are a couple of things in article marketing that you have to do. First you need to do this every day or at least 5 posts a week to your blog followed up with the prerequisite spinning and backlinking. Next, you need to include the Alexa and SEO Quake toolbars on your browser so you can monitor your progress. Other wise how do you know where your’e going if you don’t know where you are? By adding these toolbars to your browser, you’re creating a two way dialogue with their servers and I’v heard that your Alexa rank will improve faster with their toolbar activated on you PC. That could be an internet myth though. I love having these toolbars on my browser though because with all the sites that I visit I can instantly see what their Alexa score and page rank are. It’s kind of cool if you ask me.

Article Marketing Final Thoughts

You definitely want to submit your content to high page rank authority sites. I think it’s a must. These are the sites that get the traffic too. So you can create a potent link to your site and you can potentially generate immediate traffic to you site, if your content is compelling and reference boxes and/or hyperlinks are set up correctly. As I stated earlier, spinning and backlinking is tedious work, but it’s the stuff that’ll create your legend. Once you start making money you can outsource all that stuff to someone on the other side of the world who would love the opportunity to help you out.

Web hosting terminology
New to web hosting? Here are some of the most common terms used…

Bandwidth
A term used by web hosts to describe how much data can pass from the server your website is hostedon to people visiting your web site. This includes the files that make up your website as well as any data downloaded from databases or media files.

ccTLD
A country code top level domain name. These domain names are associated with a country or geographic location e.g. .co.uk (UK), .fr (France and .cn (China). The ability to register these domain names from another country depends on the registrar’s rules. For example, co.uk has no restrictions whereas .it (Italy) demands you are based in Europe.

Domain Name System
The system that maps domain names to the corresponding machine’s IP addresses. This system is essentially a phone book that translates human friendly names into computer friendly numbers. Because this information is stored across multiple computers any updates to a domain (including registration and ownership details) can take up to 48 hours to work its way across all of them.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
Once you are ready to see what your website looks like online, uploading the files to your web space is really easy and is often as simple as clicking, dragging and dropping. The method you will use to get your website online is called File Transfer Protocol (FTP). Don’t be put off by the name, all this does is take the files from your computer and put them on to the web host’s server for people to access. Simple!

In order to do this your web host may offer an upload function though your account with them, but that means you have to log in every time. A quicker alternative that most people use is FTP software. Some HTML editors come with this built in (e.g. Dreamweaver & Microsoft Expression Web) but even if yours doesn’t there is the industry standard stand alone (which is free) to download called FileZilla.

HTML
HTML (Hyper Text Mark-up Language) is the first layer of a web page and deals with the content (the text, any lists, tables, quotes…).

LAMP
LAMP is an acronym used to describe a set of open source software used by many people and businesses to save money and to prevent platform lock-in.
• Linux: Operating system
• Apache: Web server
• MySQL: Database
• PHP: Program

MySQL
MySQL (owned and developed by Sun Microsystems) is the world’s most popular open source database. It is also part of the open source software stack known as LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP).

Sub-Domain
Sub-domain names are domains that are part of the parent domain name. They are free to set up and can be useful if you have areas of your site you want to categorise e.g.
dictionary.domain.com, thesaurus.domain.com.

TLD
Top Level Domain Names have no association with any countries and were amongst the first to be created. E.g. .com, .net, .org.

Buy Web Hosting
Web Space
The amount of space allocated to your website by a web host to store all your files and data. The more web space you have the more information you can store.
