Link Building Strategies: 7 Rules Of The Road

Link BuildingLink building is still the best way to get noticed and to build traffic to you blog. I have heard some people suggest that link building is not as important as it once was, but when the rubber meets the road successful link building is one of the most important tasks involved in becoming successful on the internet.

Link building is the process of attracting other websites, through a variety of methods and getting them to link back to one of the pages on your website. In the movie “Field Of Dreams” they said “if you build it (a baseball field) they will come”. Well, that’s only true on movies and even if you create a great website or blog, nobody will just start visiting it without you taking action. There are multiple factors involved in creating links, but I have found 7 factors that are essential to your link building success.

Link Building Diversification

Link Building diversification is the process of building links from a multitude of different sources to show the search engines that your site is important and has enough clout to attract virtual properties from all of the internet. This includes: blogs, “real websites”, social bookmarking directories, article marketing directories, eCommerce sites, EDU/GOV/ORG sites, Wiki sites, review sites, press release sites and social networks.

Quantity vs Quality of Domains That Link To Your Site

It’s great to have loads of links to your site, but the quality of the sites that link to yours is more important that the quantity. Since the Google Panda/Farmer algorithm adjustments have rolled out, I have noticed a substantial deterioration in the number of sites that now link to mine. I believe it’s because many of the poor quality sites and auto-blogs that republished my posts on Ezine Articles and Articles Base have systematically gotten wiped out. My links got cut in about half around the end of June, 2011. So anytime you can get links from higher page rank sites (link juice) the more secure you’ll be and the more clout you’ll receive in the eyes of Google.

Types of Sites That Link To Your Site

As I mentioned above, it is very important to reach out and find links from all across the web. This improves your sites presence, help increase and maintain page rank a makes it harder for the competition to imitate your link patterns and dislodge you from your position in the SERP’S. The bottom line is that it is critical to have links from a wide variety of links and IP addresses.

Links Should Originate From Sites That Are Relevant To Your Site

This is called “thematic relevancy” and has to do with the overall topic of the linking website. If you have a website that focuses on bicycle repair, a link from a Forex site won’t do you much good. I’ve found it to be a heavily debated issue though. Ultimately the closer the match the better. Now if you have a bicycle repair site and can get a link from bicycling.com, for instance, then that would be the best.

Anchor Texts Are Important In Link Building

Anchor Texts are link text or link labels that are the clickable, visible portion in a hyperlink. This is the really important that your keyword phrase is included in the title and also in the clickable text in resource boxes and elsewhere. It’s one of those on-page SEO tactics that is important

Creating Backlinks On Your Homepage and Interior Pages

I have read some people make the mistake of only linking sites to their homepage and thinking t that is enough. “Deep Linking” is critical and will help drive your overall site authority. Some people say that it’s a 70% vs 30% split between links going to your home page and links going to your interior pages. My site really doesn’t have a homepage as each page is a unique post with its own keyword which should be linked to other relevant, high authority sites. Sometimes I accomplish those goals and sometimes not.

Where To Find High Quality Backlinks

So where can you go to find all of these links? Article marketing has been hit by the Google, Panda adjustments, but is still a great source for backlinks. Video Marketing is big and getting bigger as YouTube has now become the top three most visited site. Social media marketing is huge and also growing rapidly. Other sources such as blog commenting, forum posting and press releases, but are just some of the ways to create links to your site.

The biggest factor in creating high quality buckling is to not just focus on one of these methods, but to spread yourself around. The more diverse the link profile you can create the better. Everybody says that “content is king” and it won’t do you much good to create backlinks to a site that nobody will like. But it also won’t help you to have great content that nobody will read. Man, who ever said that internet marketing would be easy is selling snake oil.

That’s a useful informative post and exactly as you say, I think link building from many different sources is key so that if, or should I say When Google does “phase 2″ of the Panda slap then those that survive on article marketing may not be left out in the cold.

Hey Stu you hit this one on the money when it comes to getting different types of back links. A lot of internet marketers get caught up getting only one type which hinders their sites in the long run. Good job in pointing this out.

Stu,
You have some pretty informative content in this post. Can you elaborate on the Google Panda change that took place?

Thanks,
Bill

Stu says:

Hi Bill,

Google has been on the move to clean up the internet and their far sweeping adjustments have impacted the underbelly of the web. In our internet marketing world we have seen sites that scrape content and autoblog sites get dramatically impacted. Article directories such as Ezine Articles and Articles Base, just to name two, have seen their ranking and clout decline. Nobody has anything to worry about if their blog offers quality, unique content. I post my articles to the article directories and many people take these articles and place them on their blog. Many of these low quality sites got wiped out and that, in turn, negatively impacted the number of links that were pointed to my site. What we have discovered is that the the Panda adjustments were not a onetime thing, but an ongoing effort to eliminate trashy content. The only issue is what does Google consider trash?

Hi Stuart,

This is an awesome post! Thank you for the great information. I bookmarked this on my desktop, so I can come back and read some more.
