There are over 2.4 billion active mobile phone users around the world.  This huge number provides the best customer base that any advertiser looks for when selling or promoting their products. Most of these phones have not accessibility to the internet but all have a SMS (short messaging service, text messaging) provision.  SMS have become the most widely read messages hence becoming the easiest way of passing information from one person to another. It has also been noted that most people spend more time with their phones than with in front of a computer. This has therefore led to an interest of using this service as a marketing tool.  SMS allows for bulk sending of messages to the diverse customer base. The message contained is meant to promote or sell the product.  This marketing strategy needs the promoter to get a list of the customers that need to be reached.  Through the bulk SMS provision, you are able to send thousands of to mobile users in a matter of seconds, all at the same time.

SMS marketing is prevalent in promotions and advertisements of leisure venues, banks, entertainment venues and drinks.  The message being sent should incorporate the 7 C’s: clear, concise, concrete, complete, courteous, correct and considerate.  This is because a sms only has 160 characters, and the whole message should fit there in.

Advantages of SMS Marketing are:

  1. Message delivery does not come with any technicalities or requirement of special skills.
  2. It is an easy to use and secure with a friendly general user interface.
  3. SMS marketing is considered to be spam free unlike in email marketing.
  4. Delivery is also more certain due to the delivery notification unlike in email, where you message may end up as junk mail.
  5. The message reaches the target market within seconds.  This helps to create and build on relationships because regular text messaging keeps the seller and the customer in constant communication. Loyalty and trust is as a result established.
  6. The message has a very high probability of being seen and the probability of being read is approximately 94%.
  7. Text messages are received and read immediately, making this marketing strategy ideal for all businesses especially ones that need timely communication e.g. special offers and promotions.  This will increase customer loyalty since only a few who receive the message enjoy such offers.
  8. People go everywhere with their mobile phones making it essential to advertise sensitive messages as well. They also read virtually everything that they see unlike when dealing with spam, junk mails or other hard and soft copy adverts. Getting instant results is therefore guaranteed.
  9. SMS marketing is relatively cheap and saves on advertising costs that may have been used on TV commercials or billboards.
  10. Development of smart phones and other third generation (3D) which have larger screens and upgraded features have made it easier to advertise through MMS (multi media messaging) using photos, music and video clips.
  11. Frank Lucas’s Mobile Mass Money covers all of these topics and more. It is too early to tell if this opportunity is worthwhile, but the initial sales are impressive. Mobile Mass Money can be purchased for $47 for the introductory series.
