Network Marketing Success:

Don’t Build Your Business On Luck

If you want to be a network marketing success, then you can’t build your business on luck. I’m far from perfect and make my share of mistakes, but a few things turned my business around when I was was working hard and getting nowhere. One of them was finding a mentor and and system that I could emulate and the other was sitting down and developing a business plan.

Winston Churchill said at the height of World War II “He who fails to plan is planning to fail”. Harvey Mackay, a best selling author on business success said, “Failures don’t plan to fail; they fail to plan.” We all know it’s true, but sometimes we’re so excited to just get to work that we miss one of the basic principles that all successful people share. One of the best ways to build a solid plan is to determine how much income you’ll need to generate in order to become financially independent. So look at your primary business venture and do a little reverse engineering.

Analyse the companies compensation plan
to determine how much volume you will need in order to generate the income you want.

Based on that volume, how many people will you need to sponsor?

Break down that total into manageable monthly, weekly and daily numbers.

How many presentations will you need make in order to achieve those objectives?
There are some recognized algorithms out there, but it basically boils done to the 30-10-1 rule. You’ll need to make 30 presentations to find 10 people who might be interested and of those one of them will join you in your business. I think that those numbers be a bit conservative, but you get the idea.

I’d never heard of Bill Britt until I started getting serious about network marketing , but Bill Britt is one of the most successful distributors in Amway history. In an interview he did with 20/20 some years ago he was asked what was his secret to success in network marketing and he replied: “There is no secret. I simply showed the plan to 1200 people. 900 said, ‘No’ and only 300 signed up. Out of those 300, only 85 did anything at all. Out of those 85 only 35 were serious, and out of those 35, 11 made me a millionaire.”

So network marketing is just like any others business. It’s a numbers game. You need to get your message in front of as many people as you can. I’ve been using the internet to generate leads for me, but you still need to have a conversation with people in order for them to join. Some people are afraid of the word closing, but that’s what it is and it doesn’t have to be difficult. Just get on the phone with the people who have responded to your offer. They’re interested or they wouldn’t have opted-in. They’ll probably be surprised that you called them, because most people don’t. We all like to hide behind our laptops and hope that people will sign up on their own, but if you simply ask them, then quite a few of them will say yes.

Before you go too far in building your network marketing business you need to sit down and make a plan. Stephen Covey said in his best selling book “7 Habits Of Highly Effective People” said that the best way to start is with the end in mind. So you can do this business part time and you can do this business full time, but you can’t do this business sometimes. I’m not certain who’s quote that is, but it sure makes sense.

How right you are! and how often do we hear the words…plan, plan plan! and so often we just don’t do it! We think because it is in our heads that is ok – but business planning is way more than that. Good article!

Nice post Stu I do think when building a business things should we well planned out and thought out. A lot of times people think success happens by chance sometimes that may be the case, but certain actions had to be taken for that success to happen.

Hi Stu,
I had not thought of reverse engineering. (light blub!)
Thank you.
