What Is Network Marketing

Are You Skeptical?

What is Network MarketingWhat is Network Marketing anyway? Some people call it multi-level marketing or just MLM for short. Network marketing has both it’s advocates and its detractors as some see it as a Ponzi Scheme or a get-rich-quick dream machine. So what are the realities of this business and what are your chances of success?

What Is Network Marketing

Statistics show that 90% of all new businesses fail within the first five years and many of the other businesses never survive 10 years. Let’s face it starting a new business is a high risk, but potentially high reward proposition. There are many people who have a dream of becoming their own boss, but never have the financial where-with-all to make it happen. People buy into franchises to increase their odds of success, but still after all is said and done, franchise businesses fail at an astronomical rate as well.

Robert Kiyosaki, the author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad, has been a strong proponent of network marketing for some time. He explains that he was also a skeptic until he ran into a business colleague who had entered this arena. Kiyosaki answers the question of what is network marketing. He said that most business spend quite a bit advertising their products and services, so rather than give money to advertisers, multi-level marketing companies give that money to distributors who in turn build a business for themselves.
What is Network Marketing
The primary advantage of network marketing is:

  1. You’ll need very little up-front cash.
  2. There is low overhead because most people work from home.
  3. You can do it part time to get started.
  4. Once you’v get things up and running you can generate enough income to move from the realms of employee to entrepreneur.

Kiyosaki became an advocate of network marketing after he observed that while the business is about making money, its more about helping people to help other people to make money so they can become financially free.

The network marketing detractors point out the fact that the people who succeed in this business focus more on getting other distributors to join than actually sell products. If you’re a business owner and you want to increase sales, then you often hire more salesman. So in network marketing you, in essence, become your own business owner and can decide to build a bigger business by working with other people and bringing them into your business as well. In the end more products and services end up being sold.

What Is Network Marketing

Has the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) gone after unscrupulous MLM companies? Yes they have, but they investigate all sorts of businesses. Shady practices are not exclusive to the network marketing industry. For the detractors to point out that a certain MLM Company was shut down by the FTC and then cast a wide net to suggest that therefore all MLM companies are shady, is disingenuous at best. Wouldn’t you agree?

So what is network marketing? It’s a legitimate way for many people just like you and me to start their own business with little up-front capital and very low overhead. If you are attracted to the idea of becoming your own boss and are looking for a more enriching life-style, then this is the business model for you. Keep in mind that it is a business and there are many skill sets that you will need to develop in order to make work for you. If you’re afraid of getting out of your comfort zone, then this isn’t for you.

Thank you for helping me understand more about MLM. I am doing internet social media marketing which has a slightly different focus. But I see how MLM can be a good venue for some people.

I love the business model, I just didn’t like the way I was being taught to prospect, so bringing my business online has been the best decision and using the same marketing tool that you do, has made a tremendous difference.

Great post,
Nicky
